Safe Schools are
Productive Schools
Safety Plan

Every school in the district has a school safety plan and a school safety committee. These plans are reviewed with faculty and staff annually.  Specific safety drills are practiced throughout the year.  These plans are also reviewed with parents after Open House each year.  Students are expected to remain silent and attentive throughout all drills so that teachers or emergency personnel can provide any necessary emergency instructions. Specific plans of action for given events are listed in the table below.

Fire Drills

Fire drills are practiced monthly.  Students are instructed where to report for each drill and practice.

Tornado Drills

Tornado drills are practiced twice each semester.

Earthquake Drills

Earthquake drills are practiced twice each semester.  An earthquake drill can also be a take-cover drill.

Take-Cover

or

Intruder

This drill is also practiced twice each semester.  It is a “lockdown” drill where students are moved quickly out of halls into the nearest classroom  and all classroom doors are locked until an all-clear is given.  There are several levels of lock-down drills depending upon the severity of the  situation facing a school.

 Resource Officer

A School Resource Officer is assigned to all secondary schools from the Floyd County Sheriff’s

Department.

Safe School Helpline

A Safe School Helpline is available to students, parents, and the community at large.  That number is 1-800-418-6423, ext. 359.  This allows for anonymous reports of school safety concerns.  All reports are immediately investigated by school personnel.

Bomb Threats

When the school receives a bomb threat a specified plan of action is implemented.  Staff members do a quick visual scan of their assigned areas and the building is evacuated.  A more detailed scan of the entire facility is conducted once the building is
evacuated.  When possible specially trained dogs are then brought to the campus to conduct another building check.  Once the entire facility has been checked a decision is made whether or not to
continue the day under normal conditions.
